Between 2020 and 2023, Bart made chalk drawings in Istanbul during the pandemic, the early phase of the war in Ukraine, and the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake. His search for walls and permission to draw developed into a story of chance, conflict, and the unwritten rules of the streets. A central figure in all this is Hasan, a carpenter from Yenikapı who becomes his ally in a city where hospitality and wariness exist side by side. Texts and photographs of these drawings are collected in ‘Istanbul Drawings’ (Roma Publications, 2026).
‘Among Others / Looking for Hasan’, presented as part of The Image Generator, is a guided walk in which Bart leads visitors past new chalk drawings while speaking about his experiences in Istanbul.
